IPR Law & Practice Course: Remfry Practitioners Lead Sessions
New Delhi NCR

What does it take to build a trademark into a legacy brand? And how does trademark law respond to evolving commercial realities?
Samta Mehra, Partner and Trademark Chair at Remfry & Sagar, explored these questions in a session titled “From BRAND to LEGACY: The Blueprint of Trademark Prosecution & Strategy”, delivered on September 5, 2026, at the invitation of MENTBLU, in association with National Law University, Delhi.
The session took students through the concept and commercial utility of trademark protection, the inclusive statutory definition of a mark, the special status of well-known trademarks and the nuances of transborder reputation in India. Drawing on her extensive experience in trademark practice, Samta also examined how business realities shape the interpretation and application of trademark law, and inform effective brand protection strategies.
Samta's session was the first module in the "Intellectual Property Rights: Law & Practice course" featuring sessions led by IP practitioners to offer students practical perspectives on different facets of IP law.
Later that month, Bisman Kaur, Of Counsel at Remfry & Sagar, led a session on Geographical Indications (GIs), exploring another dimension of intellectual property protection.
What connects Darjeeling tea, Kolhapuri chappals and a FENDI Baguette? Each tells a story about origin, identity and the commercial value of cultural heritage.
From the foundations of GI protection and the relationship between geography, quality and reputation, to the challenges of defining geographical boundaries, protecting traditional craftsmanship, navigating overlapping IP rights and different modes of protection, the session examined the many nuances of GI law through examples from India and across the world.
