INTA 2025: Copyright Implications of Training AI Models

Partner Shivam Vikram Singh moderated a thought provoking table topic session at the International Trademark Association’s (INTA) Annual Meeting 2025 on ‘Copyright Implications of Training AI Models’.

The session brought together a dynamic group of legal professionals and academicians to unpack some of the most critical questions at the intersection of intellectual property and artificial intelligence.

They explored the mechanics of AI training, debated whether AI can be considered an author or joint author, and examined if AI-generated works can be protected under existing copyright laws. A key focus was the use of copyrighted material for training purposes – could this fall under fair use or similar exceptions? Also discussed was the potential liability for infringement as well as recent case law developments across jurisdictions.

The session made one thing clear – as AI evolves, so must legal frameworks that govern it.
