Swarup Kumar


Swarup has been practicing intellectual property law since 2003. He represents and counsels clients from varied technological fields to help them identify, protect and leverage their intellectual property rights. He is an experienced strategist when it comes to developing and managing patent portfolios not only in India but overseas jurisdictions as well.

He has substantive experience in handling both contentious as well as non-contentious patent matters. His practice includes rendering patentability opinions, drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications, handling searches including Freedom to Operate searches, conducting oppositions, filing annuities, as well as advising on the transfer and licensing of rights. Swarup argues appeals before the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) and has appeared in patent litigation matters before the Indian courts. Besides patents, Swarup has also worked in the domain of protecting design and trademark matters.

Swarup is a founder member and an elected Secretary of FICPI, India. On behalf of FICPI, he regularly collaborates with the Indian Patent Office (IPO) and Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) on matters of strategy.

He is often invited to speak on Indian IP law and practice at national and international platforms such as FICPI-China, LES-Russia, FICPI-India roundtables etc. He also contributes research papers, articles and opinions quite frequently for publication in renowned IP journals and magazines.
